Driver killed after crashing into tractor-trailer in Mahwah

The vehicle became engulfed in flames in the early Sunday morning crash.

A man was killed when he drove into the rear end of a tractor trailer in Bergen County early Sunday morning. 

State police said that a man driving a Jeep struck the tractor trailer in the northbound lanes of route 287 near milepost 63.5 in Mahwah around 2:30 a.m. 

The Jeep became engulfed in flames and the driver was trapped inside, police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after emergency personnel responded.

The man has not yet been identified.

Both vehicles were traveling at the time of the crash, and the driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured. 

The road was closed on the northbound side for about four hours during cleanup and while an investigation into the incident was ongoing.
